Scientists on the verge of victory against Parkinson's disease

Scientists from the University of California have created a molecular compound for the control of Parkinson's disease - CLR01. It has been already tested on mice suffering from this neurodegenerative disease. CLR01 reduces the level of the toxic protein (alpha-synuclein) in the brain. This protein is associated with the development of Parkinson's disease, UPI.com reports.

In Parkinson's disease, alpha-synuclein accumulated in the brain causes motor disorders and the death of cells that produce the neurotransmitter dopamine. CLR01 is a molecular forceps that can prevent the formation of alpha-synuclein deposits. The compound is not dangerous for healthy cells.

The scientists have established that there are two types of toxic alpha-synuclein. The first type forms complexes, and the second one is soluble. The second type is more dangerous for neurons, and it is hard to be detected. CLR01 accurately effects on the soluble form of alpha-synuclein. Due to the compound effect, the balance and coordination of experimental animals with Parkinson's disease have been improved.
