Most exciting research of 2021

The authors of Medscape highlighted 3 studies published in 2021. They believe the following studies will transform medicine in the near future:

1. At the beginning of 2021, a study on autoimmune encephalomyelitis was published in the Science Journal. Scientists led by Dr. Ugur Sahin, who is one of the developers of a new vaccine against Covid-19, and the head of the German company BioNTech as well, tested the vaccination against autoimmune encephalomyelitis in an animal model. The vaccine, which is experimental, based on messenger RNA without affecting other immune functions, was able to protect mice from the development of autoimmune encephalomyelitis. If this vaccine works in humans, it will be a great breakthrough in the history: humans will be able to treat multiple sclerosis without additional immunosuppression or immunomodulation.
2. A study, published in the Annals of Neurulogy, focuses on the treatment of Friedreich's ataxia with the candidate omaveloxolone, developed by Reata Pharmaceuticals. An animal trial has shown that this experimental drug has a fairly positive effect on the function of mitochondria, and also suppresses inflammatory processes. The drug was successfully tested in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study in patients with Friedreich's ataxia.
3. A study, published in The Lancet, is not very optimistic, but it is definitely important for clinicians. The study from the Netherlands, has involved 955 patients. The scientists checked whether it makes sense to prescribe tranexamic acid to people with subarachnoid hemorrhage, as soon as this diagnosis is confirmed on CT. The authors have found no difference between the placebo groups and those treated with tranexamic acid. Based on this, it was concluded that the administration of tranexamic acid to patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage was not beneficial.
